The following February 15, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 1, column 6: In a letter received this week by Mr. and Mrs. M.N. Hayden from C.E. Ryan, Brigadier General, U.S. Army, they were informed that their son, “Gene,” is training with the famed 101st Airborne Division. His current address is Pvt. Eugene H, Hayden, U.S.55090431, Co. L. 506th Abn. Inf. Regt., 101st Airborne Div., Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky.
Permitted a 36 hour leave last week-end, Gene was met at Camp [Breckinridge] Saturday afternoon by his parents and they enjoyed an over-night stay and Sunday dinner in Evansville.

This May 3, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found page 5, column 4: Pvt. Eugene Hayden came from Camp Breckinridge, Ky., to enjoy the week-end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Midren N. Hayden and sister Jennie. “Gene” is training with the 101st Airborne Division.

This August 16, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found page 1, column 2: Pfc. Gene Hayden arrived home Saturday night and will enjoy a 10-day furlough with his parents and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Mildren Hayden and Jenney Mae. He will return to Camp Breckinridge, Ky., where he received his basic training.

The following November 22, 1951, Lowell Tribune article was found on page 2, column 3: Pfc. Eugene Hayden who is attending signal corps school at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, will have as his Thanksgiving guests, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mildren Hayden. The Haydens left Tuesday morning by train. Gene will have leave from Wednesday night until Monday morning.

This article appeared in a January 31, 1952, Lowell Tribune on page 1, column 3: Mr. and Mrs. Mildren Hayden and daughter, Jennie and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Gene Hayden, drove to Fort Dix, New Jersey, last Thursday and enjoyed a long weekend with the Mildren Hayden’s son, Pfc. Gene. Mrs. Gene Hayden remained in New Jersey with her husband.

E.H. HAYDEN COMMISSIONED SECOND LIEUTENANT
Fort Monmouth, N.J. — Eugene H. Hayden, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.H. Hayden, Lowell, received his commission April 23rd as a second lieutenant in the Army. The 23-year-old officer was presented gold bars at graduation ceremonies of the Signal Corps’ Officer Candidate Department class.
The Army commission awarded Lieutenant Hayden, along with 53 other officer candidates, climaxed twenty-two weeks of intensive classroom and field instruction. During the rigid course, general military and leadership training with emphasis on operation and maintenance of Signal Corps communications equipment were stressed. Prior to OCS, Lieutenant Hayden was assigned at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky.

Born in Lowell, Lieutenant Hayden was graduated from Lowell High School in May, 1946. He entered Army service in January 1951.

His OCS graduating class of ’54 is the fourth at Ft. Monmouth since Signal Corps officer training opened here last September. In three previous classes, 159 candidates were commissioned.

Lieutenant Hayden is married to Darletta Hayden and is a resident of Lowell. The Haydens have a son, Terry Lee, age 4.

After a ten day leave which Eugene is enjoying at home, he will report to Camp Gordon, Georgia, for an additional six-week course after which he will join the 25th Signal Construction Battalion at Camp Edwards, Mass.

Gene Hayden Promoted to Lieutenant Rating
Eugene Hayden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mildred Hayden, who has been attending officer candidate school at Monmouth, New Jersey, recently completed his courses and was awarded the rating of lieutenant. Gene is being transferred and sends a new address for mailing his Tribune: Lt. Eugene H. Hayden, 01885327, Co. B., 25th Sig. Const. Bn., Camp Edwards, Mass.
